Music has been a part of corporate worship in the Christian church since its inception in the first century. Throughout the Middle Ages, the church was at the forefront of innovation and creativity in music. But during the Renaissance as regional folkloric genres gained prominence, secular music grew in popularity. The reformers, noticing this shift in popular musical tastes, set Christian poetry to contemporary secular melodies, creating songs that we now consider traditional hymns.
